IB Diploma or A-Level: Choosing in Hong Kong
Both are accepted everywhere that matters. The real question is which one fits how your child works.
Families ask which qualification universities prefer. Universities accept both, publish equivalences for both, and admit students from both to every course. That question has no useful answer.
The question with an answer is which one suits the student.

Which student suits which
The IB works for
Students who are broadly strong and have not settled on a direction. Students who work steadily across a long period, since coursework rewards consistency. Students who would benefit from being made to keep maths and a language going. Students applying widely across several countries, where a single internationally legible qualification is convenient.
A-Level works for
Students who know what they want to study and want to go deep. Students who are strong in three areas and weak elsewhere, since the IB will expose the weakness and A-Level lets them drop it. Students who perform well in exams and less well in sustained coursework. Students who would find the Diploma core a distraction rather than a benefit.
The uncomfortable case: a student who is genuinely poor at maths or at languages will find the IB harder than A-Level, because the Diploma does not let them opt out. That is a real consideration and it is not a failure of ambition to weigh it.
Workload
The IB is heavier in total and more evenly distributed. There is always something due, which suits students who work steadily and punishes those who work in bursts.
A-Level concentrates pressure at the end. A student can coast further into the course, which is an advantage until it is not.
Neither is easy. Three A-Levels taken seriously, with strong grades, is not a soft option, and students who choose A-Level expecting a lighter ride tend to be corrected in the first term.
How this actually gets decided in Hong Kong
For most families the decision is made by choosing a school, because most Hong Kong schools offer one or the other. ESF schools and many international schools run the IB. Some, including a number of British-model schools, run A-Levels or IGCSE into A-Level.
That means the real decision point is school selection at Year 7 or at sixth form entry, not a curriculum conversation in Year 11. Families who want a genuine choice need to be thinking about it a year earlier than they usually are.
If your child is already in a school offering only one, the productive question is not which is better. It is how to do well at the one in front of them.

Frequently asked questions
Do UK universities prefer the IB or A-Levels?
Neither. They publish offers in both currencies and admit students from both to every course. What they check is the subject prerequisites, which is why subject choice matters more than the qualification.
Is the IB harder than A-Levels?
Broader and more continuous rather than harder in a single subject. Three A-Levels at A* is not easier than the equivalent IB score, it is difficult in a different way.
Which gives a better chance at Oxbridge or the Ivy League?
Both are well represented. Excelling at either beats being average at the other, and for US applications the rest of the file carries more weight than the curriculum.
Can you switch from the IB to A-Levels?
It usually means changing school, and the transfer is easiest early in Year 12. Later than that it costs time. If a student is struggling, work out first whether the problem is the curriculum or a specific subject, because those need different remedies.
