Several IGCSE subjects are tiered, and the Core tier caps the attainable grade — typically at a C or grade 5 depending on the board. Schools sometimes enter borderline students at Core to protect against a low grade, and that is occasionally the right call. Often it is not.

The decision should be made on evidence: what the student scores on a full Extended past paper under timed conditions, with several months still to run. We can run that assessment and give you a straight answer, which is a more useful basis than a prediction made in October.

The two boards cover similar content and examine it differently. Practical papers differ substantially in the sciences, formula sheets differ in maths and physics, and mark schemes reward different phrasing. A tutor teaching generic IGCSE content will get a student most of the way there and lose the last few marks in precisely the places that decide an A versus an A*.

The step from IGCSE into the IB Diploma or A-Level is steep, particularly in Maths and the sciences. Students who arrive in Year 12 with rusty algebra spend the whole first term catching up in a course that does not wait.

We run bridging work over the summer between Year 11 and Year 12 — usually a short block focused on the algebraic fluency and the study habits that the next course assumes. It is one of the highest-return pieces of tutoring we offer.
