IB & IGCSE Chemistry and Biology Tutors in Hong Kong

IGCSE Biology looks like the easiest of the three sciences and produces some of the most frustrated students, because knowing the material and scoring on it are different things. The specification is large, the questions are heavily worded, and the mark schemes are unforgiving about vague phrasing.

Where the marks go

• Command terms. "State" wants a fact. "Explain" wants a cause. "Suggest" wants applied reasoning about an unfamiliar context. Students who answer all three the same way cap themselves at a B.
• Data questions. Graphs and tables from unfamiliar experiments now carry a large share of the paper. This is a technique, not a knowledge test, and it is very trainable.
• The practical paper. Variables, controls, reliability and improvements — with the specific phrasing examiners credit.
• Precise recall. Enzymes, transport, respiration, homeostasis, genetics and ecology all have definitions where near-enough scores zero.

We work through Cambridge (CAIE 0610/0970) and Edexcel Biology, including the Combined and Coordinated Science routes where Biology sits alongside the other two sciences.

IGCSE Chemistry splits neatly into a calculation layer and a recall layer, and most students are noticeably weaker at one of them. The trial lesson tells us which.

• Moles and stoichiometry — the topic that most reliably decides the grade. We drill it until it is mechanical.
• Bonding and structure, with the structure-to-property reasoning that questions actually test.
• Organic chemistry — homologous series, reactions and the naming conventions.
• Qualitative analysis and practical technique, including the tests-and-observations questions that carry easy marks for students who have learned them properly.

IB Chemistry is a step up in both abstraction and volume. Energetics, kinetics and equilibrium are conceptually harder than anything at IGCSE, and the HL extensions in organic chemistry and acids and bases add real depth.

What we focus on

• Paper 1 speed and elimination technique under time pressure.
• Paper 2 extended response structure, and using the data booklet fluently — many students lose marks simply from not knowing what is in it.
• Organic mechanisms at HL, drawn correctly with curly arrows that mean what the examiner expects.
• The Internal Assessment, worth 20% — research question, method, uncertainty and evaluation.

IB Biology is the largest recall load in the Diploma sciences, and the course rewards students who build structure into their revision early rather than attempting to memorise the syllabus in the final term.

• Cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution and human physiology, plus the HL extensions.
• Command-term discipline, which matters even more here than at IGCSE because the answers are longer.
• Data-based questions in Paper 2 and the statistical reasoning they require.
• The IA, including experimental designs that are actually feasible in a school laboratory.

For students on the Cambridge or Edexcel A-Level and IAL routes we cover the full two-year programme, the practical endorsement, and the synoptic demands of the final papers. Many of these students are applying to medicine or life sciences, so we coordinate the tutoring with admissions test preparation and the personal statement where relevant — see UK and US admissions.

Science tutoring works well in groups of four: students hear each other reason through a mechanism, and hearing a wrong answer explained is often more instructive than hearing a right one. One-to-one is the better option when a student is behind on content and needs to move at their own pace, or when the IA deadline is close.
