The IB Diploma is not a set of six subjects. It is six subjects, three Internal Assessments to five, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, all landing in the same eighteen months. Where IB students actually lose points
Ten years of Diploma results point to the same handful of causes.
Internal Assessments left too late
The IAs are worth 20–30% of each subject and are the most controllable marks on the whole Diploma — the student has months, access to their teacher, and no time pressure. Students who treat them as coursework to be finished the night before the deadline give away points that would have cost them nothing.
The wrong Maths course
Students in AA HL who should be in AA SL, or in AA when AI suited them better, lose points in Maths and then lose more elsewhere because Maths is consuming all their time. If your child is still choosing, read the AA versus AI comparison first.
Command terms treated as decoration
Across every subject, the IB marks against command terms. Students who answer "evaluate" as though it said "describe" cap their marks in every paper they sit, in every subject.
Paper 1 pace
Especially in the sciences. Students who reason every multiple-choice question from first principles run out of time. Elimination is a taught skill.
How our IB tutoring is organised
- Free trial lesson — a real lesson with the tutor who would teach your child, with a written diagnosis afterwards.
- Small groups of four or one-to-one, weekly during term with intensive blocks before mocks and the May session.
- IA and EE support throughout the year, within the IB's academic honesty rules.
- Past papers marked to the real mark scheme, with the mark scheme shown to the student.
- Online, at the centre, or at home — including for students who have moved to UK boarding schools and want to keep the same tutor.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an IB tutor cost in Hong Kong?
Small-group IB tutoring starts from HK$250 per hour. One-to-one is priced by level, with HL subjects and Extended Essay supervision at the higher end. We quote the full package before the first paid lesson and charge no registration fee.
When should an IB student start tutoring?
The two highest-value moments are the summer before Year 12, when subject choices are settled and bridging work pays off, and the start of Year 13 while the IAs can still be rescued. Students come to us at every stage, but the further into Year 13, the more the work becomes triage rather than improvement.
Do you help with the Extended Essay and TOK?
Yes. For the EE we help with framing a researchable question, structuring the argument and managing the reflection sessions — the two most common failure points are a question that is too broad and a timeline that slips. For TOK we work on the essay and the exhibition. In both cases the work is the student's.
Can you tutor IB students who are abroad?
Yes. A significant share of our IB students are Hong Kong families now at UK boarding schools or overseas, taught online in term time and in person during the holidays.
Do you tutor IB MYP as well as the Diploma?
