IGCSE English Tutor HK

First Language English is more demanding and carries more weight with universities and selective sixth forms. It expects sophisticated composition and close reading of demanding passages.

Second Language English assesses functional competence for students genuinely working in an additional language. A strong Second Language grade is worth more than a weak First Language one — but a capable student entered here is capped below what they could have achieved.

Fluent speech is a poor predictor. We assess reading and writing directly and give you a direct recommendation.

• Reading passages — comprehension and summary, where marks go to imprecise lifting from the text rather than answering in the student's own words.
• Directed writing — audience, form and register carry marks in their own right. A letter that reads like an essay loses them regardless of content.
• Composition — narrative and descriptive writing, where vocabulary range and controlled structure separate the top band.
• Coursework, where your school follows that route, with drafting and redrafting cycles.

Most students who underperform in IGCSE English write well and write slowly. Every session includes writing to time, because a beautiful essay two-thirds finished scores below a good one completed.
