Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE: What Actually Differs

The most visible difference, and a live source of confusion in Hong Kong.

Edexcel moved its International GCSE syllabuses to the 9-1 scale across the board several years ago. Cambridge has been phasing 9-1 in subject by subject and region by region, so many Cambridge IGCSEs still award A* to G.

The practical consequence is that a Hong Kong student can hold a transcript with both scales on it, and siblings a year apart can be graded differently in the same subject. Both are equally recognised by universities. See IGCSE grades explained for how the scales line up.

One real difference: 9-1 separates the top end. Where A* is a single grade, 9-1 distinguishes 7, 8 and 9, which gives strong candidates somewhere to stand out.

Practical assessment in the sciences

The biggest teaching difference. The two boards structure practical assessment differently, and the papers reward different phrasing about variables, reliability and improvements. A student drilled on the wrong board's practical paper is practising the wrong exam.

Formula and data sheets

What is provided differs. That changes what has to be memorised, and students discover the difference in the exam if nobody checked.

Tiering

Cambridge tiers Core and Extended across several subjects. Edexcel structures papers differently. See Core or Extended.

Question style

Both examine the same content and word it differently, and mark schemes reward the phrasing their own examiners expect. This is why past papers must come from the right board. Working through the other board's papers is useful practice and poor calibration.

University and sixth-form recognition. Both are accepted everywhere, and no admissions office prefers one. Difficulty is comparable, and claims that one board is easier are usually based on a single subject in a single session.

Anyone telling you one board is better is selling something. What matters is which one your child sits.

Ask the school, per subject, because schools mix boards. It is common to sit Cambridge sciences and Edexcel maths at the same school.
