IGCSE or GCSE: What the Difference Actually Is
Same level, same recognition, different design. The differences that matter are practical, not academic.
IGCSE and GCSE sit at the same level and are equally recognised. The confusion is understandable and the practical differences are real, particularly for families moving between Hong Kong and the UK.
What differs
| IGCSE | GCSE | |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | An international cohort | The England and Wales school system |
| Available in Hong Kong | Widely | Rarely |
| Content | International contexts and examples | Anchored to the English National Curriculum |
| Coursework | Limited, with some syllabuses offering it optionally | Largely removed after the 2015 reforms |
| Practical science | Often assessed by a written practical paper | Assessed through required practicals and written questions |
| Grading | 9-1 or A*-G depending on board and syllabus | 9-1 |
| Exam series | May and June, plus October and November for many syllabuses | Mainly May and June |
What does not differ
Recognition. UK universities, UK sixth forms, Hong Kong universities and international employers treat them as equivalent, and the Department for Education recognises IGCSE for entry to UK sixth forms.
Difficulty is comparable, and claims either way usually rest on a single subject in a single session.
The practical exception worth knowing: a small number of UK state schools prefer or require GCSE for entry to their own sixth form. If you are planning a move to a UK state school, check that school's admissions policy specifically rather than relying on the general equivalence.
When this actually matters
Moving from Hong Kong to a UK school mid-course. A student who has done a year of IGCSE joining a school running GCSE will find the syllabus overlaps substantially and does not align exactly. Get the specification codes from both schools and identify the gaps rather than assuming the content matches.
UK boarding school applications. UK independent schools are thoroughly familiar with IGCSE, and many teach it themselves in preference to GCSE. This is not a concern.
Everyone else. Your school offers one of them and you sit that one. There is no decision to make.

Frequently asked questions
Is IGCSE harder than GCSE?
Comparable. They differ in design and assessment rather than in level, and difficulty comparisons usually rest on one subject in one session.
Do UK universities accept IGCSE?
Yes, on the same basis as GCSE, including for courses that set minimum English and Maths requirements.
Can a student move from IGCSE to GCSE mid-course?
Yes, and it needs planning. The syllabuses overlap without aligning exactly, so get the specification codes from both schools and map the gaps before term starts.
