IB Chinese Tutor in Hong Kong
Fluent speech is not the same as literary analysis. We teach the analysis, the text types and the oral.
IB Chinese divides sharply. Chinese A is a literature course taught in Chinese, with the same analytical demands as IB English A. Chinese B is an acquired-language course assessed on four skills. Students who speak fluent Cantonese or Mandarin frequently assume Chinese A will be straightforward, and then find that the difficulty is in the analysis rather than the language.
Chinese A: Language and Literature
- Paper 1 — guided analysis of an unseen text, with the same "how does this work" demand as English A.
- Paper 2 — comparative essay across two studied works, structured by idea rather than by text.
- The Individual Oral — a global issue explored through two extracts.
- The HL Essay — a narrow line of inquiry sustained over 1,500 words.
中文 A 課程要求的是文本分析能力，而唔係語言流利程度。好多本地學生講得好、寫得一般，就係喺分析同論證結構度失分。
Chinese B
For acquired-language candidates: the prescribed themes, the productive skills, and the text types — 書信、演講辭、報告、博客 — each of which has conventions that carry marks. Students who write good content in the wrong form lose those marks for no good reason.

Frequently asked questions
Should my child take Chinese A or Chinese B?
Chinese A suits students with strong reading and writing who can handle literary analysis in Chinese. Chinese B suits students whose Chinese is functional but not literary. Schools usually place students, but the placement is worth questioning if it does not match what you see at home. We can assess and advise.
