Hiring an IGCSE Chinese Tutor in Hong Kong
What to ask before you hire an IGCSE Chinese tutor — and the three decisions that matter more than the tutor's CV.
Most families hiring an IGCSE Chinese tutor in Hong Kong start with the tutor's background. Three other decisions matter more, and all of them should be settled before lessons begin.
1. First Language or Second Language
This is the single largest determinant of the grade. Cambridge and Edexcel both offer a first-language Chinese route and a second-language route, and they are different qualifications with different ceilings.
The mistake families make is assessing on speech. A student who speaks Cantonese at home, attends an English-medium international school and has never written a formal Chinese composition is not automatically a first-language candidate. Ask any prospective tutor to assess reading and writing on paper before they advise.
2. Simplified or traditional characters
Boards and schools differ, and a student who has learned traditional characters through a Hong Kong primary education should not be switched to simplified for exam convenience partway through. Confirm which set your child writes and make sure the tutor teaches it.
3. Does the tutor teach the composition formats?
IGCSE Chinese composition is assessed partly on form. 書信、報告、演講辭、記敘文、議論文 each have conventions — openings, register, structure — that earn marks independently of content quality. A tutor who teaches Chinese language generally, rather than the exam specifically, will leave those marks on the table.
Ask directly: which formats will you teach, and can I see a marked student sample?
What we do
We assess reading and writing at the free trial lesson, give you a written recommendation on the paper, and then teach to the specification — formats, comprehension question types, and vocabulary built for the exam. Lessons run at our Causeway Bay centre, in Kowloon, or online.
