IB Physics Tutor in Hong Kong

Uncertainties, HL fields and Paper 1 pace — the three things that most reliably separate a 5 from a 7.

IB Physics is a mathematically demanding course wearing a conceptual disguise. Students who chose it because they enjoyed IGCSE Physics are frequently surprised by how much algebra the Diploma expects, and by how strictly definitions are marked.

Uncertainties: the most under-prepared topic on the course

The IB examines uncertainty and error explicitly, in the papers as well as in the IA, and it is consistently the weakest area we see in new students. Absolute versus percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, uncertainty in a gradient, and knowing how many significant figures an answer is entitled to.

None of this is conceptually hard. It is simply rarely taught systematically, which makes it one of the cheapest sources of marks available to a student who does learn it properly.

The HL extension topics

Where SL-to-HL movers most often struggle:

  • Fields — gravitational and electric, and the potential-versus-field-strength distinction students routinely blur.
  • Electromagnetic induction, with the sign conventions and the direction rules.
  • Quantum and nuclear physics, conceptually unlike anything earlier in the course.
  • Wave phenomena at HL depth.

Paper technique

Paper 1 rewards elimination and pace. Paper 2 rewards laid-out working that survives an arithmetic error — a student who shows the substitution still earns method marks when the arithmetic slips, and a student who works in their head does not. Definitions are marked strictly: "the rate of change of velocity" earns the mark, a gesture at the idea does not.

The Physics Internal Assessment

Worth 20%. Physics IAs live or die on whether the investigation produces data with a real, measurable trend and a defensible uncertainty treatment. We help with the research question, the method, the uncertainty analysis and the evaluation — the student runs the experiment and writes the report.

What Hong Kong parents and students say

I got 43 in total, 7 for Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Thanks for helping me so much! I'll go to Cornell.

Frequently asked questions

Do you tutor IB Physics HL?

Yes, and it is the majority of our IB physics work. The HL-only material — fields, induction, and quantum and nuclear physics — is the most common reason students come to us.

Should my child take Physics HL with Maths AA HL?

It is a strong combination for engineering and physical sciences applications and a heavy workload. Whether it is right depends on the student's current maths, not their ambition. We are happy to give a view after a trial lesson.

Can one tutor cover Physics and Maths together?

At SL, usually yes, and it works well because the tutor sees the algebra weakness in context. For HL Physics with AA HL we more often recommend two specialists.
