IB Points and University Offers: What Score You Actually Need
Hong Kong schools averaged 36.72 points against a world average of 30.58. That gap changes what a good score means here.
Parents ask what a good IB score is. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which benchmark you are using, and in Hong Kong the two available benchmarks are far apart.
How the 45 points are made up
Six subjects, each graded 1 to 7, giving 42. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay combine on a matrix for up to 3 more, giving 45.
To be awarded the Diploma a student needs 24 points and must satisfy several conditions: no grade 1, limits on the number of 2s and 3s, minimum totals across HL and SL, and passing grades in TOK and the EE. Students focus on the total and get caught by the conditions.
The Hong Kong benchmark
In the 2025 session, Hong Kong schools averaged 36.72 points against a world average of 30.58, with a 97.02% pass rate and an average subject grade of 5.78 against 4.89 globally. At least 31 students in Hong Kong scored the maximum 45.
Individual schools sit higher still. German Swiss International School averaged 41.0 in 2025, one of the highest school averages anywhere. Singapore International School and Malvern College Hong Kong averaged around 39, Canadian International School 37.7, and the ESF group 36.1 across roughly 936 candidates.
The practical consequence: a 34 is a solidly above-average result internationally and a below-average one in most Hong Kong international schools. Both statements are true. Which one matters depends on whether your child is competing for a place against the world or feeling measured against the classroom, and the second is what actually affects a teenager's morale.
What universities ask for
Offers are made on total points and, importantly, on specified HL grades. A student can hit the total and miss the offer by one HL grade, and this happens every August.

These are orientation figures. Always check the current published requirements for the specific course, since they move year to year.
Grade boundaries are not fixed
The IB sets subject grade boundaries after each session, so the mark needed for a 7 in Chemistry differs between sessions and between SL and HL. A student sitting just below a boundary is the standard case for an Enquiry Upon Results.
The useful implication for revision: a small number of extra marks can cross a boundary, and marks are cheapest to find in exam technique rather than in learning more content. This is why we spend so much time on how answers are written rather than on covering more material.
Where the marginal points actually come from
For a student sitting on 34 and wanting 38, the four points are rarely in the subject they find hardest.
- The bonus points. Up to 3, from TOK and the EE, both of which are coursework with no exam pressure.
- The IAs. 20% of each subject, done under conditions the student controls.
- The subject sitting just below a boundary. Usually the cheapest single point available.
- Exam technique in the strongest subject. Converting a reliable 6 into a 7 is often easier than lifting a 4 to a 5.

What is a good IB score?
Against the world average of 30.58 in 2025, anything above 33 is strong. Against the Hong Kong average of 36.72, the same score is below the local norm. Which benchmark applies depends on what you are using the score for.
What is the minimum score to pass the IB Diploma?
24 points, plus a set of conditions on individual grades and on TOK and the Extended Essay. It is possible to reach 24 and still not be awarded the Diploma if those conditions are not met.
How many points is 45 and how rare is it?
45 is the maximum: 7s in all six subjects plus all 3 bonus points. In 2025 at least 31 students in Hong Kong achieved it, which is a high concentration relative to the size of the cohort.
Do universities look at HL grades separately?
Yes, and this catches students out. A typical UK offer specifies both a total and individual HL grades. Meeting the total while missing a specified HL grade means the offer is not met.
