IB Retakes and Remarks After Results Day
Two routes exist and both are time-limited. The decisions get made in days, not weeks.
Results arrive in July and some of them miss an offer by a point. There are two routes forward, they suit different situations, and both have deadlines that arrive quickly. Decide with a clear head in the first few days rather than a fortnight later.
Enquiry Upon Results: the remark
An Enquiry Upon Results is the IB's review service. Only your school's Diploma Programme coordinator can submit one on your behalf, so the first call is to the school, not to the IB.
A Category 1 enquiry is a remark of an externally assessed component by a senior examiner. It can raise a subject grade. It can also lower it, and that risk is real, which is why this is a decision to make deliberately.
When a remark is worth it
- The subject sits fractionally below a grade boundary.
- One grade is the difference between holding and losing a university place.
- The result is out of line with everything else the student produced, including mocks and coursework.
When it is not
- The result matches the student's other work. A remark is not a second attempt.
- The grade does not change any outcome. There is no prize for a higher certificate.
Enquiries open on results day and the main window closes around mid-September, so speak to your coordinator immediately. Universities will often hold a place while a remark is pending, but only if you tell them it is happening.
Retaking a subject
You can retake one subject or several. Registration goes through a school or an authorised IB examination centre, and your best result in each subject counts towards the Diploma.
Which session. For a May candidate, the November session of the same year is usually the better choice, because you sit the syllabus you already studied. Waiting until the following May risks a syllabus change and means a longer gap from the material. November results are released in January.
What is worth retaking. Externally examined components respond to a retake. Internal Assessment marks generally carry forward, so a subject where the IA was the weakness may not improve much on a resit. Check which component actually cost the grade before committing to a session.
Talking to the university first
Before choosing either route, contact the university. This order matters and students get it backwards.
Ask three questions: will you still accept me at the grade I got; will you hold the place pending a remark; and would you accept me next year with an improved grade. The answers determine whether a remark, a retake or neither is the right move. A university that will accept you as you are makes the whole question moot, and that happens more often than students expect.
Tutoring for a retake
A retake is a different task from a first sitting. The content is largely known, the gap is specific, and the timeline is short. We start by working out precisely which component and which question types cost the marks, then work on those rather than re-teaching a course the student has already sat.
For a November retake, that is roughly three months, which is enough for a targeted lift and not enough to rebuild a subject from the ground up. We will say which situation you are in at the first session.

Frequently asked questions
Can an IB remark lower my grade?
Yes. A Category 1 remark can move a grade up or down, and the new grade stands. Request one when the evidence suggests the grade is out of line, not as a routine gamble.
When is the IB November retake session?
Exams run from late October into mid-November, with results released in January. For a May candidate it is usually the better session because the syllabus is the one you studied.
How do I apply for an Enquiry Upon Results?
Through your school's Diploma Programme coordinator, who is the only person who can submit it. Enquiries open on results day and the window closes around mid-September, so contact the school straight away.
Will universities wait for a remark?
Many will hold a place while an enquiry is pending, but only if you tell them promptly that one has been submitted. Contact admissions the same week.
