Theory of Knowledge: Essay and Exhibition Help

A TOK prescribed title asks about how knowledge works. Students answer the topic instead.

Given a title about the role of consensus in knowledge, a student writes about climate science, and specifically about whether climate science is right. That is a good essay about climate science and a weak TOK essay, because it never steps back to examine what consensus does as a mechanism for producing knowledge.

The discipline is to treat every example as evidence about knowledge rather than as a subject to be argued. Being well informed makes this harder, not easier, which is why able students struggle with it more than you would expect.

What separates the top bands

• Sustained engagement with the exact title. Not a nearby question the student found more interesting. The wording is chosen carefully and the marks follow it.
• Real counterargument. Not a token paragraph beginning "however, some may argue", but a position the student takes seriously enough that answering it costs them something.
• Examples that do work. Two developed examples beat six mentioned. Each should be specific enough that it could not be swapped for another.
• Comparison across areas of knowledge. Showing that a claim about knowledge holds differently in history than in mathematics is what the assessment is for.

Choose the title on which you have genuine examples, not the one that sounds most interesting in the abstract. Students routinely pick a title they cannot evidence.

Three objects, one internal assessment prompt, 950 words, marked internally and moderated. Lower stakes than the essay and easier to do well in, provided the objects are right.

The objects must be specific and real. "A newspaper" fails. "The front page of the South China Morning Post on a particular date, which I have in front of me" works, because a specific object has a specific history that can be interrogated. Each object needs a clear link to the prompt, and the three should not all make the same point.

TOK and the Extended Essay combine on a matrix worth up to 3 bonus points, and a failing grade in either can prevent the award of the Diploma outright. Three points is the difference between a 38 and a 41, which is the difference between two very different university conversations.

It is also the cheapest part of the Diploma to improve. There is no content to learn, so improvement comes from understanding what is being assessed, and that can be taught in a few focused sessions rather than a year of study.
