What IGCSE Tutoring Costs in Hong Kong

IGCSE sits below IB rates because the tutor pool is deeper. A graduate who can teach IGCSE Chemistry competently is far easier to find than one who can take a student to a 7 at IB Chemistry HL, and price follows supply.

This is the decision that determines the bill, and it deserves more thought than the hourly rate.

Tutor the subjects where there is a specific, identified problem. Do not tutor a subject because the grade is a B and you would prefer an A, unless you know why it is a B. A student getting Bs across the board is usually facing one shared problem, in exam technique or in workload management, and tutoring five subjects treats the same problem five times at five times the cost.

A sensible starting point is one or two subjects, chosen after looking at marked papers rather than at report card grades. Add more only if the diagnosis in those subjects turns out to be genuinely subject-specific.

Ask about each by name: registration fee, assessment fee, materials fee, minimum package length, cancellation terms, and peak pricing before the exam series. Any of these can add materially to a term.

The one that catches families hardest is the minimum package. A reasonable hourly rate inside a compulsory 40-hour block is a large commitment made at the point of least information, before you have seen the tutor teach.

Two situations where we would tell you not to buy tutoring.

The student is not doing the work between lessons. Tutoring multiplies effort. Multiplying zero gives zero, and adding sessions makes it more expensive rather than more effective.

The problem is organisation, not subject knowledge. A student missing deadlines across nine subjects has a scheduling problem. That is worth fixing directly, and it does not need a subject specialist at HK$600 an hour.
