Choosing IGCSE Subjects

Most Hong Kong international schools require English, Maths and at least one science, then offer choice across the remainder, with eight to ten subjects in total.

A workable structure: the compulsory core, a science route, a language, a humanity, and one or two subjects the student actually wants to do. That last category matters more than it sounds, because a student with nothing they enjoy in a nine-subject timetable disengages from all of it.

This is the choice with the longest reach.

Three separate sciences means Physics, Chemistry and Biology as individual IGCSEs. It uses more of the timetable and gives the strongest preparation for A-Level or IB sciences.

Combined or Coordinated Science compresses all three into fewer qualifications and fewer papers, freeing timetable space for other subjects.

Combined Science is not a barrier to studying science later, and schools are right to say so. It does mean arriving at A-Level or IB HL with less depth, which shows up in the first term. For a student who might want medicine, engineering or a physical science, the separate sciences are the safer route. For a student heading towards humanities or the arts, Combined Science is a sensible use of the timetable.

For English, the choice is between First Language and Second Language. First Language is more demanding and carries more weight with selective sixth forms and universities. Second Language suits a student genuinely working in an additional language, and a strong Second Language grade beats a weak First Language one. Assess on writing, not on speech. See IGCSE English.

Which humanity a student picks rarely closes a door. History, Geography and Economics all lead to broadly the same places at sixth form. Pick the one the student will engage with.

Adding a tenth subject to look industrious is usually a poor trade. Sixth forms and universities look at grades in the subjects that matter, and a spread of good grades beats a longer list of mediocre ones.

The best single filter, applied to every optional subject: will this student still be interested in it in eighteen months? Interest survives a two-year course better than strategy does.
