IGCSE or IB MYP: Choosing a Middle Years Route in Hong Kong

Two years of external exam practice before the exams that count. A student arrives in the Diploma knowing what a mark scheme is, how to pace a paper, and how it feels to sit a real exam series. That experience is worth more than it sounds.

It also produces a portable, universally understood set of grades, which matters if a family may relocate.

MYP

Assessment against criteria including inquiry, communication and transfer to unfamiliar contexts, which sit closer to what the Diploma actually rewards. Students who have done MYP are frequently better at open-ended tasks and at the coursework components, and the Personal Project is genuine preparation for the Extended Essay.

There is also more room in the timetable, because no time goes to exam preparation.

MYP gives no external benchmark. A student can hold respectable criterion levels for three years, and neither the family nor the school has a comparison against a national or international cohort until Year 12. Gaps in algebraic fluency in particular can persist unnoticed, because criterion assessment does not test it directly the way an exam paper does. Neither has a decisive advantage, and students from both routes score well. They arrive with different gaps.

MYP students tend to be stronger on coursework and inquiry and weaker on exam technique and drilled fluency. IGCSE students tend to be the reverse. Knowing which one your child is makes the first Diploma term considerably easier to plan for, and it is a more useful question than which route is better.
