IGCSE or IB MYP: Choosing a Middle Years Route in Hong Kong

One ends in external exams, the other does not. That single difference drives everything else.

Hong Kong international schools take one of two routes through Years 9 to 11. Some run IGCSE, ending in external examinations. Others run the IB Middle Years Programme, which is internally assessed against criteria.

Families choose by choosing a school, so this is really a school-selection question. It is worth understanding what each route does before it is decided for you.

What each route gives a student

IGCSE

Two years of external exam practice before the exams that count. A student arrives in the Diploma knowing what a mark scheme is, how to pace a paper, and how it feels to sit a real exam series. That experience is worth more than it sounds.

It also produces a portable, universally understood set of grades, which matters if a family may relocate.

MYP

Assessment against criteria including inquiry, communication and transfer to unfamiliar contexts, which sit closer to what the Diploma actually rewards. Students who have done MYP are frequently better at open-ended tasks and at the coursework components, and the Personal Project is genuine preparation for the Extended Essay.

There is also more room in the timetable, because no time goes to exam preparation.

The blind spot in each

MYP gives no external benchmark. A student can hold respectable criterion levels for three years, and neither the family nor the school has a comparison against a national or international cohort until Year 12. Gaps in algebraic fluency in particular can persist unnoticed, because criterion assessment does not test it directly the way an exam paper does. If your child is in MYP, ask specifically about the mathematical foundations rather than about the overall level. See IB MYP tutorials.

IGCSE can over-train recall. Two years optimised for exams can produce a student who is excellent at answering questions and less practised at open-ended work, which is exactly what the Diploma coursework asks for. See what comes after IGCSE.

Which prepares better for the Diploma

Neither has a decisive advantage, and students from both routes score well. They arrive with different gaps.

MYP students tend to be stronger on coursework and inquiry and weaker on exam technique and drilled fluency. IGCSE students tend to be the reverse. Knowing which one your child is makes the first Diploma term considerably easier to plan for, and it is a more useful question than which route is better.

Frequently asked questions

Is IGCSE or MYP better preparation for the IB Diploma?

Neither decisively. MYP students usually arrive stronger on coursework and inquiry, IGCSE students stronger on exam technique and recall. They arrive with different gaps rather than different levels.

Does MYP give you a qualification?

Only where the school offers the optional eAssessment leading to the MYP certificate. Many schools do not, in which case the record is school reports rather than an external qualification.

How do I know if my MYP child is on track?

Ask for the criterion-level breakdown rather than the overall level, and ask specifically about algebraic fluency and written structure. Those are the two things MYP does not measure directly and the Diploma assumes.
