After IGCSE: Bridging into the IB Diploma or A-Level
The steepest jump in the whole school system, and it lands on students who have never had to work hard before.
Every year we meet Year 12 students who got A*s and 8s at IGCSE in June and are struggling badly by November. Their parents assume something has gone wrong. Nothing has. This is what the step looks like.
What actually changes
From recall to reasoning
IGCSE rewards knowing things. A well-drilled student can score highly on accurate recall. The IB Diploma and A-Level ask students to combine ideas across topics and reason towards an answer that was not in any textbook.
The mathematical demand jumps
In Physics and Chemistry especially. Algebra that was occasional at IGCSE is continuous at Year 12, and a student whose manipulation is slow rather than wrong now loses marks to the clock.
Nobody chases you
IGCSE teaching is closely monitored, with regular homework and quick intervention. Sixth form assumes independence. A student who never learned to work without being asked discovers this in about six weeks.
Coursework arrives
Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay, practical endorsements. Long projects with distant deadlines and no weekly pressure, which is a genuinely new skill.
Why the strongest students often struggle most
A student who scored 8s and 9s without much effort has never had to develop a working method, because they never needed one. They have talent and no technique.
The student who worked hard for a 6 arrives with habits: they know how to revise, how to ask for help, and what to do when something is difficult. In the first Diploma term, the second student frequently outperforms the first, and the first takes it badly because it has never happened before.
If this is your child, the useful intervention is not more content. It is teaching them how to work, before they conclude they are no longer clever.
The summer between Year 11 and Year 12
This is the highest-return tutoring window in the whole school career, and it is short.
- Algebraic fluency to automaticity. Rearranging, indices, surds, fractions, logs. Not understanding them, doing them without thinking. This single item pays for itself across Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Economics.
- A preview of the first term's content in the hardest subject, so the student meets it twice.
- Independent working habits, practised while the stakes are zero.

A few weeks here changes the shape of Year 12. It is also the block families most often skip, because the student has just finished exams and everyone wants a break, which is understandable and expensive.
If the first term has already gone badly
Diagnose before acting. There are three distinct causes and they need different responses.
A content gap from IGCSE is the most common and the most fixable. Close the gap and the subject usually comes right.
Wrong subject or wrong level is worth considering honestly and early, while switching is still possible. See IB subject choice.
No working method is the hardest to admit and the most valuable to fix, because it affects all six subjects at once.
What does not work is adding tutoring hours across every subject without knowing which of the three you are dealing with.

Frequently asked questions
Is the IB Diploma much harder than IGCSE?
Yes, and the jump is larger than most families expect. It is a change in kind rather than in quantity: from recall towards reasoning, with a higher mathematical demand and far less supervision.
Should my child do tutoring over the summer before Year 12?
For Maths and the sciences, and particularly for Maths AA HL, it is the highest-value tutoring in the whole school career. A few weeks of algebraic fluency work removes a problem that would otherwise run all year.
My child got A*s at IGCSE but is struggling in Year 12. Why?
Usually because IGCSE never required them to develop a working method. They have ability and no technique, and the fix is teaching them how to study rather than teaching more content.
What IGCSE grades are needed for the IB Diploma?
Schools set their own requirements, commonly a 6 or a B in a subject to take it at HL, and higher for Maths AA HL. Check your school's published entry criteria.
