IGCSE Resits and Reviews of Results

Ask three questions in order.

1. Does it block a sixth-form subject? If a student needs a 6 in Maths to take it at A-Level or IB HL and got a 5, the grade is blocking something concrete. This is the strongest case for a resit.
2. Does it block a school place? Some sixth forms set a minimum profile. Check the actual requirement before assuming.
3. Is it English or Maths? A small number of competitive university courses set minimum IGCSE English and Maths requirements, so these two carry weight beyond sixth form.

If the answer to all three is no, the resit is probably costing a term of Year 12 attention to improve a line on a transcript that nobody will read. A weak grade in a subject the student has dropped, in a year when they are starting the IB Diploma, is rarely worth the time.

Before booking a resit, consider a review of results, which is the boards' remarking service. It goes through the school, not the family, so the first conversation is with the exams officer.

It is worth requesting when the mark sits a few marks below a boundary, or when the result is out of line with the student's mocks and coursework. It is not a second attempt, and a review can move a grade down as well as up. Deadlines fall within weeks of results day, so act quickly.

The main IGCSE series runs in May and June, with a smaller series in October and November for some syllabuses. Availability differs by board and by subject, so check the specific syllabus rather than assuming.

Students who have left the school where they sat the exam enter as private candidates through an approved centre. In Hong Kong the British Council is the usual route. Entry deadlines fall months before the exams and are strict, and this is the step that catches families out.

A resit is a different job from a first sitting, and treating it like a repeat of Year 11 wastes the advantage. The content is largely known and the gap is specific.

Start by identifying which paper and which question types cost the marks. A student who lost the grade on the practical paper needs different work from one who lost it on the calculation questions, and lumping both into general revision helps neither.

Be realistic about the timetable. A student resitting while starting the IB Diploma is carrying two workloads, and we would rather say at the outset that one subject is a sensible resit load and three is not.
