IGCSE Revision Timeline: Year 10 to the Exams

Nothing external is assessed, so Year 10 feels safe. It is where the following year is decided.

The single highest-value habit is turning each topic into questions as it is taught, and answering them from memory later. A student who does this arrives in Year 11 with a revision resource for nine subjects. A student who takes tidy notes arrives with material they will have to convert into questions in March, under time pressure, in nine subjects at once.

Bring past papers forward. Students who meet real questions only in the spring have learned the content and the exam separately, and then have to join them under pressure.

One paper section a week per major subject is enough at this stage. Mark it against the published mark scheme, and have the student do the marking. Handing it to someone else removes the part where the learning happens.

Mocks fall in this term or early in the next. Treat the results as diagnosis rather than as a verdict: what matters is which category the lost marks fall into.

This is the period that decides the grades.

• Build a subject rotation. Nine subjects cannot be revised sequentially. Something covered in January and not revisited is gone by June. Rotate on a fixed cycle.
• Weight by need, not by preference. Students revise what they enjoy. Allocate time against mock performance instead.
• Categorise lost marks as content, technique or carelessness, and treat each differently. Most students discover far fewer are careless than they assumed.
• Do not neglect the practical papers. In the sciences these carry marks that reward learned phrasing about variables and improvements, and they are among the easiest marks on the whole qualification.

Stop learning new content in the last fortnight. The marginal new topic is worth less than the topic the student almost knows, and consolidating what is nearly secure converts more marks.

Full papers under timed conditions, spread across subjects. Then, with the timetable in front of you, work out where the pinch points are: two papers on one day, or three subjects inside four days, are common and worth preparing for rather than discovering.

Sleep is not a luxury item in this month. Retrieval consolidates during sleep, and a student revising until 2am is undoing the work they did at 9pm.
