IB Maths Tutor in Hong Kong
Getting the course choice right, then getting the marks — Paper 1 algebra, Paper 2 calculator fluency, and an Exploration with real depth.
More IB points are lost to the wrong maths course than to weak maths teaching. A student in AA HL who belongs in AA SL will lose points in maths and then lose more in every other subject, because maths will eat the time those subjects needed.
AA or AI — and SL or HL
Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented with substantial calculus. Required or strongly preferred for engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science and many competitive economics courses.
Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics led with heavier explicit GDC use. Well suited to social sciences, business, medicine, life sciences and design. AI HL is a demanding course, not a soft alternative.
The level decision should follow the university course requirements and the student's actual current performance, in that order. If subject choices are still open, talk to us — it is a short conversation that regularly saves a grade.
Paper by paper
- Paper 1 (no calculator) — algebraic fluency under time pressure, and the fastest place to gain marks for most students.
- Paper 2 (calculator) — genuine GDC fluency: solving, graphing, statistics and distributions quickly enough to leave thinking time.
- Paper 3 (HL) — extended investigation-style problems that reward stamina, structure and comfort with unfamiliarity.
The Exploration (IA)
Worth 20% and the most common source of unnecessary lost marks in IB Maths. The usual failure is a topic with no mathematical room to develop: the student writes a tidy report about something they find interesting, uses maths that stops at the syllabus, and lands in the middle bands.
We help choose a topic with genuine depth, then coach the personal engagement and reflection criteria, which are frequently the difference between a 12 and a 17. The mathematics and the writing are the student's own.

Frequently asked questions
Which universities require Maths AA rather than AI?
Engineering, physics, mathematics and computer science courses at competitive UK universities commonly require AA, often at HL, and several economics courses do too. Requirements vary by university and change year to year — send us the shortlist and we will check the current entry requirements before your child commits.
Can my child switch from AA HL to AA SL?
Usually yes early in Year 12, subject to the school. Whether they should depends on the university requirements and how the rest of the Diploma is going. We are happy to give a view.
Do you help with the Maths Exploration?
Yes — particularly topic selection, which is where most Explorations are limited before a word is written. We coach the structure and the reflection; the mathematics and the writing are the student's.
