IB Maths AA or AI: How to Choose

The one Diploma choice that can rule out a degree, made on a form in Year 11.

Every IB student takes maths, and picks between two courses at two levels. Get this wrong in the direction of AI when a degree required AA and the consequence surfaces in Year 13, when it is expensive to fix.

What the two courses contain

Analysis and Approaches (AA)Applications and Interpretation (AI)
EmphasisAlgebraic technique, proof, calculusModelling, statistics, real-world data
CalculatorPaper 1 is non-calculatorTechnology used throughout, explicitly

Start from the degree

This decides it for most students. Check the current published requirements for the actual courses on the list, since they change.

  • AA, usually at HL: Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, and Economics at several competitive UK universities.
  • Either, with HL sometimes specified: Medicine, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Psychology, Architecture, Business.
  • Either, at SL: Humanities, Languages, Law, Arts.

The trap is a student aiming at Economics who takes AI SL, then finds in Year 13 that their target universities specify AA HL. Switching that late is rarely possible.

Where the degree is genuinely undecided, AA keeps more doors open. That is an argument for AA as a hedge, not an argument that AA is better.

AI is not the soft option

Because AI has less algebra, students assume it is easier. AI HL is a demanding course. The statistical content goes further than most students expect, the modelling questions are long and unstructured, and Paper 3 rewards a kind of open problem-solving that some students find harder than a page of calculus.

Students who pick AI to avoid difficulty tend to be the ones who struggle in it, because they wanted less maths and got different maths instead.

Then choose the level

Once the course is settled, HL or SL should follow from two things: whether the degree requires HL, and how the student is actually performing now.

AA HL is the most demanding maths in the Diploma. It expects fluent algebra on arrival. A student who found IGCSE Extended Maths a stretch will find AA HL punishing, and taking it anyway usually costs points in maths and in the subjects that lose time to it.

A pattern worth naming: a student scoring a 5 in AA HL would in many cases have scored a 7 in AA SL, and few degrees distinguish between the two in a way that justifies losing two points. Ambition is not free.

Moving between them

HL to SL within the same course is normally possible early in Year 12, and schools handle it routinely. AA to AI, or the reverse, is harder because the content diverges quickly.

If a switch is being considered, get an honest assessment of whether the difficulty is the course or a gap underneath it. A student struggling in AA HL because their IGCSE algebra was never automatic has a fixable problem, and moving course does not fix it. See Maths tutoring and bridging from IGCSE.

Frequently asked questions

Which is harder, IB Maths AA or AI?

AA HL is the most demanding of the four options. Beyond that, they are hard in different ways: AA in algebraic manipulation and proof, AI in modelling and statistical interpretation. AI is not a soft option.

Do universities accept Maths AI?

Widely, yes. The exception is courses that specify AA, which include most Mathematics, Engineering, Physics and Computer Science degrees and a number of competitive Economics courses. Check each course's published requirement.

Can I switch from AI to AA?

Only early in Year 12, and it depends on the school's timetable. The content diverges quickly, so a late switch means covering material the class has already done.

Should I take Maths HL if my degree does not require it?

Usually not. A 7 at SL is worth more to an application than a 5 at HL, and the time HL consumes comes out of five other subjects.
