More than in any other science, IB Biology marks turn on answering the exact question asked.

• Outline — a brief account. Two or three marks, and no credit for a page.
• Explain — reasons or causes. An answer that describes what happens without saying why scores nothing here.
• Distinguish — differences stated as a comparison, not two separate descriptions.
• Suggest — applied reasoning about an unfamiliar situation, using taught principles.

Students who write more to be safe reliably score less. We drill the terms until the required answer shape is automatic.

A large share of Paper 2 presents unfamiliar experimental data and asks students to read it carefully. This is a technique rather than a knowledge test: read the axes and units first, identify the trend before the anomaly, quote figures with units, and distinguish correlation from cause. We also cover the statistical reasoning the course requires — standard deviation, error bars and what a statistical test does and does not tell you.

Biology rewards spaced retrieval more than any other Diploma subject. We build a retrieval schedule from the start, open every lesson with a short quiz on older material, and teach students to build their own question banks rather than re-reading notes — which feels productive and is not.

Worth 20%. The most common failure is a research question that cannot generate enough data to analyse. We work on choosing an investigation that is feasible in a school laboratory, collecting enough repeats, handling variability, and writing an evaluation that weighs limitations rather than listing them.
