IGCSE Biology looks like the most manageable of the three sciences and produces the most frustrated students. There is little maths and no abstraction to speak of, so students conclude it is a memory test, revise by re-reading, and land on a B.
The specification is large, the questions are heavily worded, and the mark schemes are unforgiving about approximate phrasing. Those three things decide the grade.
Command terms decide the grade
More than in Physics or Chemistry, IGCSE Biology marks turn on answering the specific instruction.
- State wants a fact. One line. Extra sentences earn nothing and cost time.
- Describe wants what happens.
- Explain wants why it happens. A description here scores zero however accurate it is.
- Suggest wants applied reasoning about an unfamiliar situation using principles from the course.
- Compare wants both sides in one statement, not two separate descriptions.
Students who know the biology and write generously score in the middle bands, because the examiner is looking for specific marking points rather than for everything the student knows. This is the fastest thing to fix in the whole subject and the first thing we work on.
Data and unfamiliar-context questions
A growing share of the paper presents an experiment the student has never seen and asks them to interpret it. This rewards technique, not recall, and it is very trainable.
The method we teach: read the axes and units before the data, state the overall trend before naming any anomaly, quote figures with units when asked to use the data, and keep correlation separate from cause unless the question gives you a mechanism.
Students who panic at an unfamiliar context are usually not short of knowledge. They have never been shown that these questions have a procedure.
The practical paper
Some of the most reliably available marks on the qualification, and among the most commonly dropped.
Independent, dependent and control variables. Why a repeat improves reliability. What makes a measurement more precise. And the improvement question, where "be more careful" scores nothing and a specific, mechanism-linked change scores the mark.
This is learned phrasing rather than understanding, which means a few focused sessions convert directly into marks.
Where the recall load actually sits
The topics where precise definitions matter most, and where near-enough scores nothing: enzymes and the factors affecting them, transport in plants and animals, respiration and photosynthesis, homeostasis and coordination, genetics and inheritance, and ecology and nutrient cycles.
We build recall through retrieval rather than re-reading. Every session opens with questions on material from several weeks earlier, because spacing is what makes biology stick across a two-year course.
