IB Chemistry is where students who cruised through IGCSE Science most often hit a wall. The content is not simply more of the same — energetics, kinetics and equilibrium demand a kind of abstract reasoning that IGCSE never asked for, and the HL extensions in organic chemistry and acids and bases add genuine depth on top.
What an IB Chemistry tutor should be fixing
Fluency with the data booklet
Students lose marks in every paper because they do not know what the data booklet contains or where. It is available in the exam; treating it as a resource to be learned rather than consulted in a panic is worth several marks a paper.
Paper 1 elimination
Thirty or forty multiple-choice questions with no calculator. Students who derive each answer run out of time. Recognising the distractors is a trainable skill.
Organic mechanisms drawn properly
At HL, curly arrows must start and end in the right places. Examiners mark this precisely, and it is one of the most common sources of lost marks among students who understand the chemistry perfectly well.
Extended response structure
Paper 2 questions carrying six or more marks need a chain of reasoning, not a paragraph containing the right words somewhere. We teach students to write in numbered logical steps.
The Chemistry Internal Assessment
Worth 20% of the subject grade, and the most reliably improvable component of the course. The recurring problems are the same every year:
- A research question that cannot actually be investigated with school equipment in the time available.
- Too few data points, or no repeats, so the evaluation has nothing to work with.
- Uncertainties calculated mechanically and never discussed.
- An evaluation that lists limitations without weighing which mattered.
We work on all four, starting from the choice of question. Within IB academic honesty rules, the experiment and the write-up are the student's own.
SL and HL, and moving between them
Students moving from SL to HL, or considering dropping from HL to SL, need a clear-eyed assessment rather than encouragement. The HL extension material is substantial and arrives at the same time as the IA and the Extended Essay. We will tell you what we think after a trial lesson and a look at recent marks.

Frequently asked questions
Is IB Chemistry HL harder than A-Level Chemistry?
They are demanding in different ways. A-Level goes deeper into fewer topics; IB HL covers more breadth with the IA and the rest of the Diploma running alongside. Students often find the IB harder to manage and A-Level harder in individual topics.
Can you help with the Chemistry IA?
Yes — research question, method design, uncertainty handling and evaluation structure. The experiment and the writing are the student's own, as the IB requires.
My child is getting a 4 in Chemistry in Year 12. Is a 6 realistic?
Often, yes, with a year to run and consistent work — a 4 in Year 12 usually reflects gaps in the early topics plus weak exam technique, and both are addressable. We will give you a realistic view after the trial lesson rather than a comfortable one.
