IGCSE Chemistry Tutor HK
Two subjects in one paper: a calculation layer and a recall layer. Most students are clearly weaker at one.
IGCSE Chemistry splits cleanly into calculations and recall, and almost every student is noticeably weaker at one of them. The trial lesson tells us which, and the answer changes the whole programme.
Moles and stoichiometry
If one topic decides the grade, this is it. Moles run through reacting masses, concentration, gas volumes, empirical formulae, percentage yield and titration. A student who has to think about the mole concept meets the same obstacle in six different question types and concludes they are bad at chemistry.
We drill it until it is mechanical, because understanding it is not enough. It has to be automatic under exam time pressure, and getting there takes deliberate repetition rather than another explanation.
Bonding, structure and properties
Questions rarely ask what a giant covalent structure is. They ask why graphite conducts and diamond does not, which requires reasoning from structure to property in a chain the mark scheme expects to see written out.
Students who have memorised the structures and never practised the reasoning lose these marks consistently. We teach it as a chain: structure, then bonding, then the property, with each link stated.
Organic chemistry and qualitative analysis
Organic at IGCSE is largely systematic: homologous series, naming conventions, and a limited set of reactions. It rewards organisation and is one of the more reliably scoreable areas once a student stops treating each reaction as a separate fact.
Qualitative analysis, the tests and observations questions, is close to free marks for a student who has learned the tests properly and close to zero for one who has not. There is no reasoning to it, and it is the clearest example in the subject of preparation converting directly into marks.
The practical paper
Variables, reliability, precision and improvements, with the phrasing the board's mark scheme credits. Cambridge and Edexcel assess practical work differently, so this is one of the places where teaching to the wrong board costs marks. See Cambridge or Edexcel.
What Hong Kong parents and students say
We are very pleased that our son Andrew received tutorials for IGCSE level Chemistry and Biology from Hudson Academy. Over the past eighteen months, Andrew's understanding of — and hence his test scores for — the two subjects saw meaningful improvements. Thanks to his teachers who had been patient and helpful.
Bob is able to make learning fun and effective. He puts fun, structured learning and target oriented together in his lessons.
Nice learning environment. Tutor Bob sir is excellent :)
Frequently asked questions
Why does my child find IGCSE Chemistry harder than Biology?
Usually the calculations. Chemistry has a mathematical layer that Biology does not, and a student whose algebra and proportional reasoning are shaky will struggle with moles regardless of how well they understand the chemistry.
Do you teach both Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry?
Yes, and we match tutors to the specification. The practical assessment and the phrasing mark schemes reward differ between the boards.
How long does it take to fix moles?
For most students, a few weeks of concentrated practice rather than one explanation. The problem is fluency under time pressure, not comprehension, and fluency comes from repetition.
