How the IB Diploma Prepares Students for University
The parts that transfer, and the parts that are oversold.
Every IB school says the Diploma prepares students for university better than the alternatives. Some of that is marketing. Some of it is true, and the true parts are specific enough to be worth naming.
What genuinely transfers
Writing a long piece of work to a deadline nobody enforces
The Extended Essay is 4,000 words with no weekly homework attached to it. Nothing forces progress. That is exactly what a university term paper is, and it is the single most useful thing the Diploma trains. Students who have managed one long unenforced deadline manage the next one.
Designing an investigation rather than following a recipe
The science Internal Assessments ask a student to choose a question, design a method and defend the result. First-year laboratory work at university asks the same. Students who have done this arrive knowing that a null result is a finding rather than a failure.
Being asked what counts as knowing something
Theory of Knowledge is the part students most resent and the part that most resembles a first-year humanities seminar. Being made to argue about the reliability of evidence, at sixteen, is not wasted.
What is oversold
Breadth. Six subjects sounds like preparation for a broad degree. Most UK degrees are single-subject from day one, and the breadth is worth less there than the depth an A-Level student brings in their three. For US liberal arts programmes the breadth genuinely helps.
Time management. The Diploma is often described as teaching it. What it actually does is punish its absence. Students who arrive without the habit do not acquire it; they get through on adrenaline in the final term and repeat the pattern at university.
Independence. IB students are supervised closely by school standards. The gap between Year 13 and first year is still large.
Where IB students struggle in first year
Two patterns recur, and both are fixable before they leave.
Depth in the HL subject. An IB HL science covers more ground than an A-Level and covers it less deeply. Students reading Physics or Chemistry at a competitive university sometimes find the first term assumes technique they met once. Doing wider reading in the intended degree subject during Year 13, rather than more revision, closes this.
Mathematical fluency. This is the big one, and it traces back to the AA versus AI choice. A student who took AI and is now reading Economics will meet calculus assumed rather than taught.
What to do in Year 13
- Read in the degree subject, not around the syllabus. An hour a week is enough and it changes the first term.
- Take the Extended Essay seriously as practice, not as an obstacle. See Extended Essay supervision.
- Close a known maths gap before it becomes a prerequisite. It is far cheaper to fix in Year 13 than in first year.
